SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
SEO is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to a website through organic search engine results.
This is done through content and design changes to make the site more attractive to search engines.
SEO includes optimizing various elements like:
- Content Quality
- Website Structure
- Site Speed
So, increasing website traffic to your site by making it more attractive to search engines.
In the following sections I will provide what I think are the most important factors to help you improve SEO for your site.
Example of SEO Optimization: Catchy Titles and Intriguing Meta Descriptions
To receive website traffic from Google a searcher must click on the link from the search engine results page. That’s where the title and the meta description come into play. Both of these elements are displayed in the Google search page.
You can receive a higher click through rate (CTR) by crafting better blog post titles and meta descriptions.
Here is an example to make this clear:

Let’s look at two SEO examples with and without headers.

Structuring your content by adding headers and subheaders throughout your content can help visually break up the text providing some relief to the reader.
Scannability of your content is improved. Let’s face it, we all scan before we dive in. Subheaders act like signposts, guiding readers through your content. Anything that makes scanning easier is a win, right?
SEO Optimization. Headers and subheaders help Google understand the structure of your content. Proper use of H1, H2 and H3 headers provide information on how keywords and topics are related to each other.
Navigating WordPress Editor
I’m going to use the WordPress editor as an example of how to use header elements. Other blogging software and platforms will have similar tools.
When you’re in the WordPress Editor, remember the hierarchy of headers. Your main title takes the H1 spot, proudly announcing the topic. For subtopics, H2 is your go-to, neatly segmenting your content. Need to drill down further? H3 dives deeper, breaking down those subtopics into digestible bites.
Always use H1, H2, and H3 in order. Think of them as building blocks, each layer dependent on the one before.
Crafting Your Subheaders
Imagine outlining your blog post like sketching a tree. Your main idea is the trunk, branching out into multiple H2 sections. If a branch needs further subdivision, sprout some H3 twigs. This approach not only pleases Google but also makes your content more navigable for your readers.
Image yourself as a tour guide. Lead your readers through your content with subheaders.

Let’s look at two SEO examples of text and then I’ll explain how and when to add links.

Think of links in your blog posts as bridges. They connect your readers to a wealth of additional information, enabling them to explore topics further or find relevant products and services.
Internal links are like secret passageways that guide Google through your blog. Sure, Google can start from the homepage, but without internal links, it might miss out on the hidden gems in your content. By linking your posts internally, you ensure Google discovers and categorizes every piece of your content correctly.
Example of SEO Optimization: Improving Readability and Removing the Fat
Here is a bloated, boring, generic first paragraph. After reading it look at the edited version below it:

As content creators, it’s exceedingly easy to inadvertently veer off the intended topic. We frequently find ourselves meandering through our prose, gradually losing sight of the primary focal point of our discourse. Additionally, it has the potential to obscure our key points in a convoluted maze of tangential thoughts. Moreover, this can lead to the unfortunate consequence of burying essential keywords within an expansive sea of unnecessary, superfluous words, diluting the impact and effectiveness of our SEO efforts.

As content creators, it’s easy to veer off-topic. We often meander, losing sight of the main point. This wandering can hurt user engagement, obscure our key points, and bury essential keywords in a sea of unnecessary words.
Better, right? Assume your audience doesn’t have much time and get right to the point!
Editing isn’t just a step in content creation – it’s the sculpting tool that shapes your message. It’s about cutting out the fluff, honing in on the core topic, and stripping away complex, verbose text. This process simplifies your message, making it more accessible and engaging for your readers.
Example of SEO Optimization: Add Plenty Of White Space Around Your Text and Images
First, what is white space?
White space (also known as “negative space”) refers to the unoccupied areas in a design or layout.
It’s the space between different elements on a webpage, such as the space between text, margins, columns, graphics, and other elements.
White space doesn’t necessarily have to be white – it simply refers to any empty, unmarked space in a design.
Large blocks of text can be intimidating. Who wanders to wade through a wall of text? I don’t. Neither do your readers, so break up your content with plenty of white space.
White space can be in the form of images, or simply generous padding and margins around your text. Unsure how to adjust margins and padding? Opt for a website theme that visually appeals to you. These themes often come with pre-set margins and paddings, making your job easier.
For the more adventurous, the GenerateBlocks plugin is a game-changer. It introduces six additional “blocks” or design elements to the WordPress editor. With these, you can tailor the margin and padding around each element. I use it on this site to create a breathable space around images and other design elements.
Bloggers, in particular, will find this precision control invaluable. It’s the key to striking the perfect balance of white space in your content. Think of it like arranging furniture in a room: the right spacing can transform a cramped space into an inviting haven.
